About Us
Our History
Nestled at the peaceful southwestern tip of Toronto Island, Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts has a story rooted in resilience, creativity, and community spirit. Originally built in 1909 as the Island Public and Natural Science School, the building served generations of local children and visiting students from across Toronto, who came to study nature in its unique setting.
In the late 1990s, the historic school faced demolition as plans emerged to return the site to parkland. Refusing to let this piece of island history disappear, a dedicated group of Toronto Island residents rallied to save it. Partnering with Artscape and working closely with the City of Toronto, they reimagined the space as a year-round arts and cultural centre. With support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and countless hours of community effort, the building was revived and opened in 1999 as Artscape Gibraltar Point.
Today, Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts is operated by ArtHubs Toronto Inc. and it offers artists from Toronto and around the world an affordable, inspiring place to create, reflect, and collaborate. With short-term residencies, long-term studios, and a welcoming retreat centre, AGP honors its past as a place of learning while continuing to nurture imagination and artistic exploration in an extraordinary natural environment—just minutes by ferry from the city.
